Pop the Cork on Perfection: Top US Natural Wines for 2024
Ah, 2024. A fresh year brimming with possibility, and what better way to embrace it than with a glass of something exquisite? But not just any glass, my friends. We're raising the bar, venturing into the vibrant world of natural wines. These beauties are crafted with minimal intervention, allowing the grapes to truly sing their terroir-inspired tunes. Ready to uncork a taste bud adventure? Let's dive into the world of my favorite natural wines from the US for 2024: Swick Winery, Tank Winery, and Scribe Winery.
Swick Winery: The Naked and Raw Winery
Nestled in the heart of Oregon's Willamette Valley, Swick Winery is a haven for Natural Wine enthusiasts. Their dedication to natural practices shines through in every sip, resulting in wines that are pure expressions of the earth. Winemaker and proprietor Joseph Swick, can be quoted saying “Our philosophy is to make our wines as naked and raw as we possibly can while having them be fun and delicious. We work with organically farmed vineyards in the colder regions of Oregon and Washington State. We love wines with acid and freshness. We make the wine that we love to drink. No conventional additives. Just grapes and (sometimes) a very small amount of SO2 to keep the wine stable in bottle. Wine is a fermented beverage that should not be a trophy or a status symbol. Wines made in this fashion are artisanal products that reflect their artist and terroir with no maquillage."
Must-try bottle: The Zero Point Zero Gamay Noir – “30 days of whole cluster maceration. Aged in 228 liter barrels for 8 months. Zero sulfur added. A slightly different and more open and free expression than other Gamay Noirs. Without sulfur added a more rustic and full flavor profile is expressed in this wine.”
Tank Winery: California Cool with an Edge
California's Napa Valley might be known for its big, bold Cabs, but Tank Winery is shaking things up with their cool-climate approach to natural winemaking. Think White Zin (not your grandmas, and not WT!!) that's bursting with delightful fruit, but not sweet, or Pinot Noir that's light and elegant with a touch of cranberry and vibes.
Must-try bottle: 2022 Skateland, Pét-Nat Sparkling Rosé, California – This beauty (with a signature fun Tank label), is delightfully fruity, but still has the funk of a pet-nat. Easy-drinking, great for sharing or a little post-work treat.
Scribe Winery: Sonoma Stories Told Through Pinot Noir
Sonoma Coast's dramatic cliffs and cool winds provide the perfect setting for Scribe Winery's Pinot Noirs to weave their magic. These are wines of elegance and finesse, with delicate fruit flavors, subtle earthiness, and a hint of savory complexity. Founders Andrew and Adam believe the best wines are birthed out of a harmonious relationship with the earth - their adherence to this belief is expressed the moment you take your first sip of their wine. You must be a member of the Scribe Wine Club to visit the winery, however, it’s worth the subscription. My fiance and I have been members for years and receiving their perfectly packaged bottles quarterly is a treat!
Must-try bottle: 2023 Nouveau of Pinot Noir – This beautifully pink Pinot Noir is the most delightful Rose anytime of year. Having gone through 100% carbonic fermentation with native yeast and is bottled unfined, unfiltered and without sulfur, it’s the perfect easy-drinking wine for any festive occasion, or a night in.
Beyond the West Coast: A World of Natural Wine Wonders
While Swick, Tank, and Scribe are shining stars of the West Coast, the world of natural wine is vast and ever-evolving. Don't be afraid to explore! Here are a few more regions and grapes to keep your taste buds tantalized:
Finger Lakes, NY: Bloomer Creek was my favorite winery in the Finger Lakes back in 2017. This husband and wife duo, Kim and Debra, were among the first in the Finger Lakes to embrace Natural Wine making 30+ years ago, and it shows. Their wines are stunning and all labels are designed by Debra!
Long Island, NY: Bedell Cellars has been around since the 1980’s and continues to produce nice natural wine on the North Fork of Long Island. They utilize naturally-occurring indigenous yeasts and ancient wine making techniques.
So next time you need a special bottle, or want to treat yourself to some of natures bounties, look for these USA-grown wines in your local shop, or order online!
